Your Privacy Matters
Dated, operated by Minotaur Mechanics LLC, is a private, AI-powered journal for your love life. This policy explains what we collect, use, and share across our website at datedapp.com and the Dated mobile app. What we collect depends on how you find us: some of it applies to everyone who visits this website, and some of it applies only if you provide your email and answer onboarding questions on the website before continuing in the app.
1. Two Ways You Reach Dated
You can arrive at Dated in different ways, and this affects what we collect. If you simply visit this website (for example, from a search engine or a social post), we use cookies and advertising-measurement technologies described below, even though you do not give us your email. If you come through one of our ads and choose to begin onboarding, you additionally provide your email address and answer a short set of questions, which we store to link your subscription and answers into the app. You can also download the app directly from the App Store and skip the website entirely; in that case we do not collect your email and do not apply the website's advertising technologies. Sections marked "(website only)" apply to people who use the website; sections marked "(funnel only)" apply only if you provide your email and onboarding answers on the website.
2. When You Visit Our Website (website only)
When you visit datedapp.com, we and our advertising partner place cookies and similar technologies in your browser and load the Meta pixel. This happens for all visitors — including those who arrive organically from search or social media and never provide an email address — so that we can measure how our website and advertising perform and reach people who may be interested in Dated. This activity is limited to your interaction with the website. It does not touch your journal, which lives in the app on your device.
3. Advertising and Measurement via Meta (website only)
Our website uses the Meta pixel and Meta's Conversions API to measure advertising performance and to build audiences of people who may be interested in Dated. For this we may share, with Meta Platforms, Inc., Facebook browser identifiers stored in the `_fbp` and `_fbc` cookies and — if you have provided it through onboarding — an irreversibly hashed (scrambled) version of your email address. This lets Meta attribute website visits, sign-ups, and purchases to specific ads. The server-side Conversions API transfer happens on our servers and relates only to your activity on this website, including purchases made through the website's checkout. The app performs no advertising tracking: it does not run the Meta pixel, and nothing collected in the app — your journal content, on-device data, purchases made in the app, or device identifiers — is ever shared with Meta. You can limit the website activity as described under "Your Rights and Choices".
4. Cookies and Similar Technologies (website only)
Our website uses cookies and similar technologies. Some are necessary for the site to function and to protect against abuse. Others — including Meta's `_fbp` and `_fbc` cookies — support the advertising and measurement described above. You can control cookies through your browser settings. Declining or clearing non-essential cookies will not prevent you from downloading or using the app.
5. Email and Account Linking (funnel only)
The app works without an account, and downloading directly from the App Store requires no email. If you begin onboarding on our website, or later log in to link a subscription or onboarding you started on the web, we collect the email address you provide in order to verify your identity with a one-time code and to associate your account across the website and the app. We do not collect a password; sign-in uses one-time codes sent to your email.
6. Website Onboarding Answers (funnel only)
If you answer onboarding questions on our website, those answers and the email address you provide are stored on our servers, associated with an account identifier, so that when you install the app and log in, your subscription and answers can be restored into the app. These answers reflect preferences and reflections you choose to share during onboarding; they are not your on-device journal entries. You can ask us to delete this server-stored information at any time by contacting us.
7. Your Journal Stays on Your Device
Your journal entries, voice recordings and their transcriptions, the people you write about, your in-app quiz answers, and the insights we generate are stored securely on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework and protected by iOS data protection. Your journal is likely to contain sensitive personal information about your dating life and the people in it. It never leaves your device unless you choose to export it or enable iCloud sync. We do not have access to it, there are no social features, and it is never used for advertising, sold, or shared with data brokers. If you record a voice note, it is transcribed to text entirely on your device using Apple's on-device Speech Recognition; the audio is never transmitted off your device.
8. iCloud and Device Sync
If you enable iCloud sync in Settings, your journal entries and related data sync across your devices via Apple's CloudKit, under your own Apple ID, with sensitive fields protected by CloudKit encryption. We do not have access to your CloudKit data; it stays within your personal iCloud account. Export, delete, and account-reset tools in the app's Settings help you manage local and synced data.
9. AI Processing
AI features such as pattern insights, weekly summaries, and post-date prompts process the content of your entries to produce the output you request. Where available, this processing happens on your device using Apple's Foundation Models framework and never leaves your device. When on-device processing is unavailable, a secure proxy fallback is used: the request is sent over an authenticated, HMAC-signed connection, the names of people you write about are pseudonymised before transmission, and our proxy does not store your prompt content. Prompts are processed transiently by our AI provider and, per that provider's API terms, are not used to train their models.
10. Purchases and Payments
Dated offers an optional paid subscription. If you subscribe through the app, the purchase is processed by Apple, and subscription status is managed on our behalf by RevenueCat, which receives product identifiers, transaction metadata, entitlement status, and anonymous app-user identifiers. If you subscribe through our website, payment is processed by Stripe and your subscription is managed through RevenueCat's web billing. We do not receive or store your full payment card number.
11. Analytics and Diagnostics
In the app we collect basic, anonymised usage information such as app opens and features used, via TelemetryDeck using a random per-install salt that cannot be linked back to your identity or journal content. Crash reports are collected via Sentry to help us maintain stability and are not linked to your identity. Journal content is never included in analytics or crash reports. If you enable notifications, we also collect your push notification device token to deliver insights and reminders.
12. Notifications
If you enable notifications, the app schedules local reminders and insight notifications on your device. You can configure notification previews in iOS Settings if you prefer entry-related content not to appear on your lock screen.
13. Third-Party Services
We use Apple (App Store purchases, iCloud sync, on-device transcription and AI), RevenueCat (subscription management), Stripe (website subscription payments; website only), Meta Platforms, Inc. (website advertising and measurement; website only), our AI provider accessed via a secure proxy (AI insights when on-device processing is unavailable, with person names pseudonymised), Sentry (crash reporting), TelemetryDeck (anonymised usage analytics), and our email provider (login codes and account emails; funnel only). Each has its own privacy policy, and we require providers to maintain data-protection standards consistent with this policy and applicable law.
14. Sharing and "Sale" of Personal Information
We do not sell your personal information for money, and we do not share your journal content. However, our use of the Meta pixel and Conversions API to share Facebook identifiers and hashed email for advertising (website only) may be considered a "sale" or "sharing" of personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising under some U.S. state privacy laws. If you download the app directly from the App Store without using the website, none of this advertising sharing occurs. You can opt out as described under "Your Rights and Choices".
15. Your Rights and Choices
You can access your personal data, export your journal entries from the app, delete your account and associated data, and opt out of non-essential notifications. You can also opt out of the sharing of your personal information for targeted advertising (website only). To opt out of advertising sharing on the website, use the "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" link in the footer of this website, use a browser that transmits the Global Privacy Control signal (which we honor automatically), decline or clear non-essential cookies in your browser, or contact us at support@datedapp.com . Using the app directly from the App Store, without the website, does not involve advertising sharing.
16. State Privacy Rights
If you are a resident of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, or another state with consumer privacy legislation, you may have additional rights, including to know what personal data we collect and how it is used, to request deletion, to opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal data for targeted advertising, and to non-discrimination for exercising your rights. We do not sell your personal information for money. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at support@datedapp.com . We will respond to verifiable requests within the timeframe required by applicable law.
17. Data Export, Retention, and Deletion
You can export your journal entries and people from the app at any time, and delete this device's data or delete everything (which propagates the deletion to your iCloud account). No journal content is stored on our servers. The limited information we do store — your email address and onboarding answers, if you used the website — is retained only as long as needed to provide the service and is deleted on request. 18. Data Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational safeguards: journal content is encrypted by iOS data protection, iCloud data is encrypted by Apple's CloudKit, network communications use TLS 1.3, your anonymous identifier is stored in the iOS Keychain, payment card details are handled by Apple and Stripe and never stored on our servers, and you can require Face ID for a local app lock that never leaves your device. No app or network service can guarantee perfect security.
19. Children
Dated is intended for adults and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child provided personal information without appropriate consent, contact support@datedapp.com so we can review and delete it where required.
20. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as the website, app, vendors, or legal requirements change. The updated policy will be available on the website or in the app, and the Last updated date will change. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
